What is ÖSKG? (East Skånes Artists´ Society)

The society started in year 1968 with an Open Studio Week. . A group of artists jointly opened their studios for the public. Only after six years the event had developed into becoming the Easter Open Studio Week with over 60 artists involved. The success called for some sort of organization and the artist society was born.

The Easter Open Studios Week invites everybody directly into the homes of the artist. Many who feels uncomfortable visiting a gallery have through the Open Studios developed an interest in art. Togheter with others you may stroll amongst colour patches and easels in a studio. A studio maybe built from a renovated barn or an expanded part of the artist home.It is a relaxing way of experiencing art. You may even be engaged into a conversation with the artist.

The idea is imitated. Today there are several similar art weeks in all over Sweden, and abroad: in Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki and elsewhere.

The professional artist situated in East Skåne may seek membership to ÖSKG society. Member admissions take place every second year. All the applications are closely examined by a jury comprising of three people. These juries are subsequently changed after every intake session.

ÖSKG stands for quality. "It´s important for our survival" says one of the artist's, dancer and chairman of ÖSKG Rachel Tess.

ÖSKG has today over 130 members. Most of the artistic fields are represented. Sculptors, painters, textile artists, glassblowers, silversmiths, ceramic artists, printmakers, handcraftsmen, wood and dancers congregate several times during the year to hold meetings to vote in the presiding committee and chairman.

To socialize amongst members is another of ÖSKG´s functions. Artists seldom have work-colleagues. It is reassuring to know that others are in the same situation!

ÖSKG´s ambition is making art accessible to everyone. "We are a link between the public and Art" says Rachel Tess.

ÖSKG runs an art gallery, Tjörnedala konsthall in Baskemölla. Except the Easter Open Studios Weeks collection exhibition it shows about 6–8  exhibitions yearly. Artists are invited, they come from all over Sweden and abroad. ÖSKG also arranges workshops and seminaries for artists.
